When I first encountered the idea of somatic or body psychotherapy, I was intrigued by its gentle invitation to listen to the body’s wisdom. At the time I was like James Joyce's character Mr Duffy, 'living a little distance from my body'. I quite simply wasn't at home in my own skin, and I could not rest or abide within myself. Restless and agitated, I spent a lot of energy on activities that kept me away from my body (and other bodies) in a hyper-aroused 'flight' state. When I started the work to tune in to my bodies sensations, and to name feelings in order to tame them I found it difficult to do, at first. However with practice I started to to be able to contain uncomfortable feelings like anxiety, sadness, helplessness, and not be pushed around by them. With kindness and compassion I started to return home to my embodied, incarnational self. Today I inhabit my body in a state of rest and peace.


In a world that often prioritises the mind over the body. This approach to healing has since become a profound part of my journey towards holistic well-being. This embodied approach helps us reclaim our bodies as safe, expressive vessels rather than places of pain, discomfort or disconnection.


For instance, a client might discover that a subtle rocking motion soothes their nervous system, or that opening the chest area invites a sense of openness and vulnerability., or elongating the spine to stand tall lessens a sense of shame. These discoveries are deeply personal and empowering.

Reflecting on my own experiences, I realise how much somatic psychotherapy has reshaped my relationship with myself. It has taught me that healing is not about fixing something broken but about embracing the fullness of who we are - body, mind, and spirit.


By honouring the body’s messages, we open doors to deeper understanding and compassion. We learn to navigate life’s challenges with easeful grace, rest and resilience, rather than being fearfully driven, frantic on the inside or emotionally stressed out. It captures for me what Jesus invites us to when he says in Matthew 11:28-30 "I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I wont lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly"
